A large and beautiful antique majolica planter with floral decoration in relief and a stylized roaring lion head on each end. The colours are rich greens, dark pink/reds, and subtle pastel yellows. The interior is turquoise. If you look at the photos you will see that even the underneath has a decorative pattern!

There is no manufactuer's mark although this piece is characteristic of pieces by Wasmuel; this being said, there is a chance it could be from similar northern French/Belgian workshops of the time that produced high-end pieces of majolica.

Interestingly, Wasmuel antique pieces are mainy unmarked and the painted 'G' underneath is most likely the craftman's initial who added the glazes; there is also a 'G' stamped into the underneath which is likely a workshop mark.

Origin : Belgium/France
Period : 1880s/early 1900s
Materials : majolica, barbotine, earthenware, ceramic

Dimensions :
Height: approx. 18.5 cm (approx. 7 and 1/4'')
Length: approx. 42 cm (approx. 16.5 '')
Width: approx. 22.5 cm (approx. 8 and 3/4'')

Condition: very good used antique with minor age-related wear. If you turn the planter on its side and look into the roof of each lion's open mouth (unseen when the planter is on a table top), there 's a small hole—as it's on each lion, we can assume it's part of the manufacturing process. You can also see a small split where the bottom of the lion heads meet the main body of the planter—these are only at the bottom tips of the lion's jaws, cannot be seen when on display, and in no way affect the structural integrity of this wonderful planter - in summary a rare and very beautiful European planter in remarkably good condition considering its age!

As photos and videos are part of our description please review them all carefully before purchase.
