A late 19th-century/early 20th century after Raphael oil painting based on Madonna della Sedia (1513–1514, Pitti Palace, Florence).

The artist (perhaps a student of the time) adapts Raphael’s tondo into a rectangular canvas, preserving the iconic green dress with patterned sleeve, the tender embrace, and the young St. John at right against a deep ground.

Its old varnish makes the colors look warm and slightly glossy.

There are also small age lines—very fine cracks—especially in the skin and middle tones (see photos). Structurally sound. A quiet focal piece for living rooms or studies under soft warm light.
